Kalwall® and Aspen Community School – Creating a Better Place to Learn

AIA Colorado West 2016 Design Award Winner – Award of Excellence Commercial/Institutional The Aspen Community School has several distinguishing features beyond its dramatic setting at the base of the Rocky Mountains. Count the distinctive look of Kalwall® translucent sandwich panels among them. The Association for Learning Environments (A4LE), which aims to improve the areas where children learn and develop, recently recognized the school with a pair of awards. The Aspen Community School received both the 2015 Peak Design Award for New Construction and the 2015 People’s Choice Award from the A4LE Rocky Mountain chapter. The school’s design team of the Cuningham Group and Studio B Architecture + Interiors redesigned the campus, adding both a new school house and a community hall/gym. The modern look of the Kalwall® panels fit seamlessly into the project’s distinctive design and are a key feature in the hall/gym. The Crystal-White panels have an impressive solar heat gain coefficient of 0.28 and U-factor of 0.23 that not only meets the school’s emphasis on energy efficiency and sustainability, but the museum-quality daylighting™ is ideal for creating a glare-free, private environment. “This important recognition by the A4LE is the result of (the school’s) insistence on architecture that strongly reflects their identity, honors their past and anticipates the future,” says Gilbert Sanchez, principal of Studio B Architecture +...

What is a Draft Curtain?

Managing Smoke Movement with SG Draft Curtain from Smoke Guard, Inc. on Vimeo. Unlike your elevator smoke barrier, a draft curtain helps to funnel smoke to venting or exhaust systems rather than providing a full enclosure. Because of this function, the SG draft curtain is ideal for warehouses, manufacturing environments, airplane hangars, and other large, open spaces. The SG draft curtain serves to limit the spread of smoke and can funnel smoke toward roof vents. The draft curtain works very well in tandem with a sprinkler system and can also be installed in environments that do not require sprinklers. The SG draft curtain is made of a glass-filament fabric that is non-combustible and smoke tight. It is available in a variety of sizes to custom fit your space. For more information on the SG draft curtain and how it could help your space, visit out Draft Curtain page today or contact us by completing our Request Assistance form or call us directly at 303-791-1010....

Tomlinson Library Remodel Maintains Open Atrium, Reduces Smoke Evacuation with McKeon Fire-Rated Curtains

During the remodel design for the Tomlinson Library at Colorado Mesa University, it was determined the existing smoke control system for the 37’ X 37’ atrium was not sufficient to meet the current codes. IBC 2012, section 404 addresses the requirements for atrium spaces.  In an atrium with more than 2 connected floors, a smoke control system must be installed.  This can cost over one million dollars, including make-up air and back-up power systems.  The smoke control design must be large enough to remove smoke from all the adjoining spaces.  To reduce the size of the system required, a 1-hour fire barrier can be installed.  This can consist of a fire barrier wall (section 706) or fire protectives that comply with section 716.  There is also a provision for installing glass with closely spaced sprinklers.  This glass exception is only for atrium areas and cannot be used in any other application. The Tomlinson Library project was initially a 70,000 SF building built in the 1980’s.  This remodel expanded the building to 95,000 square feet, including adding a kitchen with a dining area and coffee shop. Bennett, Wagner & Grody architects were awarded this remodel.  After exploring several options with Powers, including increasing the size of the smoke control system, they decided to use McKeon’s fire and smoke rated curtains for most of the separation.  Glass with sprinklers were also used to separate some individual rooms as well as create the barrier between the dining area and the library.  Make-up air was brought into the building by opening a portion of the storefront with automatic swing door operators. The 19 McKeon smoke...

Woodward ITS Building Basks in the Glow of Kalwall

Powers recently completed the Kalwall translucent façades and skyroof at the Woodward world headquarters in Ft. Collins.  This monumental project featured over 20,000 square feet of highly insulated, Kalwall sandwich panels on the 300,000 square feet ITS building… short for industrial turbomachinery systems.  Designed by Ghafari, the building features a massive shed skyroof and a series of light monitors and clerestories providing perfectly diffused natural daylight throughout the high-tech manufacturing space.  Daylight studies were completed by our team to help dial in the light transmission levels and maximize energy efficiency. In addition to the daylighting scope, Powers is also completing a series of large, Modernfold operable partitions in the common area / café.  Gensler led the interior design and was tasked with the challenge of creating a space that will spark innovation and collaboration… “taking Woodward into a new era with an open concept suited to recruit and retain millennials”, according to Steve Stiesmeyer, director of corporate real estate for Woodward.1   Sources:...
