Fowler Jr & Sr High School

At Fowler Jr. & Sr. High School in Fowler, Colorado, daylight plays an important role in creating bright, welcoming spaces for learning, gathering and activity. Kalwall® translucent panel systems and Solatube® tubular daylighting devices, furnished and installed by Powers Products, work together to bring controlled natural light throughout the school.

Kalwall is used extensively as both an exterior daylighting system and an interior architectural element. In the gymnasium, large expanses of translucent panels introduce soft, diffused daylight through the building envelope. Unlike conventional glazing, Kalwall distributes incoming sunlight more evenly, helping minimize glare and harsh contrasts while maintaining privacy. The luminous panels fill the large-volume athletic space with comfortable natural light and create a distinctive architectural feature around the perimeter of the gym.

Elsewhere in the school, Kalwall translucent panel walls bring that same quality of diffused light into interior learning and gathering spaces. In the student commons, tall translucent walls define and separate spaces without the visual weight of an opaque partition. Light filters through the panels, allowing spaces on both sides of the wall to benefit while still providing separation and privacy. The softly illuminated surfaces become part of the interior architecture, giving the commons an open, contemporary character and helping daylight reach areas that might otherwise feel enclosed.

This interior application demonstrates another advantage of translucent building systems: daylight can be shared between spaces. Rather than stopping natural light at a conventional interior wall, the Kalwall panels allow it to continue deeper into the building while preserving functional boundaries between different areas.

Solatube® tubular daylighting devices provide another layer of natural light, capturing daylight at the roof and delivering it into interior areas from above. In combination with Kalwall, they give the design team multiple ways to introduce daylight based on the needs and location of each space.

Together, the systems demonstrate a comprehensive approach to daylighting: Kalwall turns exterior and interior walls into luminous architectural elements, while Solatube brings daylight into the building from overhead. The result is a school filled with comfortable, diffused natural light—from the expansive gymnasium to the smaller spaces where students study, socialize and connect.
